Spring Delights | May 2024

SPARKLING:

JACQUES LORENT Brut 2012 Champagne * Champagne, FR
This is an almost unparalleled vintage for the region. This brut is made by a small, superbly-run grower cooperative located just outside of Epernay with 250 member growers.

Grapes - 45% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir, and 10% Pinot Meunier

Flavors - Luscious oxidative style with white-cherry, apple-butter and an earthy smokiness. Biscuit, honey, and citrus nose that opens to a roundish, nuanced palate with ginger, chamomile and brioche notes.

Serving - Delightful with roasted game birds, crispy chanterelles, or a wonderful plate of thinly sliced & salty imported ham. Or just for sipping a glass because life is good. Fullish. Best served cold.

Album Pairing - LUCY PEARL ‘Lucy Pearl’ - 2000 * All the bounce and funky late-90s R&B sound you want to hear while your palate dances to the tune of these brilliant bubbles.

ROSE:

FOLK MACHINE Rosé 2023 * Arroyo Seco, CA ~ Club Exclusive
This wine pushes all of our 'happy buttons'. Organic grapes (from California - inland from Carmel / Monterey). Natural. Artisanal. Spontaneous fermentation. A kiss of skin-contact. This unique, very pale, Gamay rosé is also bottled in low carbon footprint Antique Green lightweight bottles.

Grape - 100% Gamay

Flavors - Fresh, semi-savory, light.

Serving - Chill, pour four glasses, & enjoy! The cleanly-grown fruit & winemaker’s handicraft showcase all things Spring.

Album Pairing - DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES ‘Private Eyes’ - 1981 * What better way to enjoy rosé season than some fun loving early 80s pop? Right? Crushable wine meets crushable tunes. Let patio weather commence!

WHITE:

BARRIGON Charelo 2021 * Queretaro, MX ~ Only 111 cases made
Since we opened QABS, few wines have knocked our socks off like this. A stunningly deliciously crisp white made in Mexico's Queretaro State - northwest of Mexico City - this bottle is a beautiful expression of the Spanish cava grape Xarel-lo (here spelled Charelo). The zany package barrigon means 'round belly', but this belies a very serious wine made of a common grape grown in an uncommon location that tastes like and performs on par with an excellent French Burgundy or Loire Valley white.

Grape - 100% Xarel-lo

Flavors - Creamy and bright, with ripe pineapple flavors alongside notes of grapefruit, dill and spearmint. Aromas of fresh baked bread and custard cream.

Serving - Perfect for building an appetite. Its low alcohol content makes it a just right for a hot, sunny afternoon - be it chilled by the poolside, under the sun in the backyard, or in motion with the ocean's waves. Pair with halibut or shrimp, light chicken dishes, mild to medium cheeses.

Album Pairing - CARLA MORRISON ‘Déjenme Llorar’ - 2012 * A beautiful and intricate album to listen to with this beautiful and intricate white wine. Sometimes bright, sometime brooding, always beguiling; both the wine and the album are sure to keep you coming back for more.

RED:

Dom de la CHENEPIERRE Chenas 'Vieilles Vignes' 2021 * Beaujolais, FR
Few people are aware that Gamay (red) and Chardonnay (white) are siblings. Seems odd, but it's true! Both are offspring of a cross of Pinot Noir and Gouais. Nerd alert complete. Speaking of offspring, Christophe Lapierre took over the growing & winemaking upon his father's retirement at this multi-generation family-owned estate & he continues to produce traditional, sturdy Beaujolais wines. This old-vine Gamay from the Cru (entitled to use its own name) village of Chenas will be a mind and palate bender for those only familiar with a lighter, juicier style of Gamay.

Grape - 100% Gamay

Flavors - Deep, structured, dark red berry & currant-fruited, earthy red.

Serving - Awesome with grilled meats, herby stews, and full-flavored cheeses

Album Pairing - MASSIVE ATTACK ‘Blue Lines’ - 1991 * A seminal and thought-provoking album to pair with a deceptively brilliant & thoughtful Gamay Noir. Pour a glass, crank the volume, and let the atmospheric soundscape and this terroir-driven red overwhelm your senses.
