Hot Fun in the Summertime | August 2024
WHITE:
DOMAINE ANDRÉ NEVEU Sancerre * Loire Valley, FR
The Neveu family, viticulteurs father and son, have been based in the heart of the Chavignol vineyards for generations, and today carry on the tradition of the great Sancerrois vignerons. Valérie (André Neveu’s daughter), and her husband Thomas, now run the domaine that extends to about 13 hectares of vines of AOC Sancerre red, white and rosé. They harvest, vinify and sell everything themselves. The fruit is destemmed before pressing and transferred to steel tank for a cold soak prior to the start of fermentation. Aged for roughly 6 months before bottling, the wines always go through full malolactic fermentation. This is the flagship wine, residing in the Le Grand Fricambault parcel within ‘Le Butte de Sancerre.’ The domaine’s plot is merely five hectares.
Grapes - 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Flavors - Pale gold with a clear & powerful brilliance. The aromas as varied as they are classic - citrus fruits spiced with a subtle hint of boxwood and broom. Clean & lively on a finish filled with fruity notes of apricot and peach. Full on summer white. Writ large. Tag it and bag it. Fist bump.
Serving - Stone fruits baby! Or heirloom tomatoes and burrata. Sometime it’s fun to be contrary, but we suggest you hit this wine with complementary flavors.
Album Pairing - Lorde ‘Solar Power' - 2021 * It’s summer, so enjoy it while it is here. This wine is bright and deep. This album is too. Beguilingly complex and playful simultaneously. sip, spin, & enjoy!
ROSÉ:
CLOS CANARELLI 'Corse Figari' 2022 * Corsica, FR
Yves Canarelli's dedication to restoring native Corsican grape varieties has been instrumental in the recognition of Corsican wines. A former economics student turned enologist, Yves took over his family's vineyard in 1993 and has been a strong advocate ever since. The Corse Figari appellation has a rich history dating back to the 5th century B.C. Despite being the oldest wine-growing region in Corsica, it took pioneers like Yves to remove non-native grape varieties and ensure the recognition that Corsican wines deserved.
Grape - 50% Sciaccarellu, 30% Niellucciu, 20% Grenache
Flavors - Aromas of peach, red berries, gooseberry, surprising spices, & an attractive minty top note. Medium-bodied, salty & taut. Impressively full flavored and subtle at the same time.
Serving - Grilled fish with garlic olive oil and Mediterranean herbs, fresh fruits, pesto, anything that has fruit and herbs to unlock all the intricacy of this beautiful wine.
Album Pairing - THE KINKS ‘One For The Road’ - 1980 * Corsicans are wonderfully crazy and lovely. This vino is punk rock. The Kinks were rocking hard with surprising beauty. Both the album and the wine are seemingly simple, but actually quite intricate and thoughtful. This is the pairing for your restless leg syndrome to find a joyous & happy home.
CHILLABLE RED:
ROCAMADRE Criolla 2022 * Mendoza, AR
After Malbec, Criolla is Argentina's most common grape varietal, and it is given the spotlight it deserves here. A three week maceration lends a red color and a hit of tannins and texture in the glass. Juanfa Suarez and Cecilia Duran are producing high altitude wines that fly out of the glass.
Grape - 100% Criolla Grande
Flavors - Bright red fruit, pie cherries, forest berries backed with minerality & light baking spice.
Serving - Chill this wine! Then enjoy it alongside your best version of a Chicago Dog. Honestly, just grill away and enjoy the dog days of August with this beauty of a wine.
Album Pairing - CURTIS MAYFIELD ‘Curtis’ - 1970 * Still leaning into the sounds of summer, this album sounds upbeat, but is actually quite dark. The same can be said for this stunning and elegant wine. Also, the album was recorded in Chicago … so let the Chicago Dogs commence!
RED:
LIMITED EDITION Cabernet Franc 2022 * Willamette Valley, OR
We have been huge fans of Limited Addition since the shop’s inception. For starters, they’re incredibly (like, seriously extremely) educated and experienced winemakers. Leveraging said experience to craft wines that are honest to the time and place they’re from results in some of the purest and most honest and unique expressions in the Willamette Valley. While they do work with a bunch of less common varietals, this Cab Franc is unique for other reasons. To start, it’s deliciously juicy for having such a textural, full body. To finish, it’s a cab franc with almost pinot-levels of terroir expressiveness. And it is incredible.
Grape - 100% Cabernet Franc
Flavors - Black currant fruit, tobacco leaf, sandalwood, joy.
Serving - You can chill this wine as well, but don’t have to. This is definitely another summer BBQ wine. A full on burger or marinated steak’s best friend. They are holding hands right now.
Album Pairing - DE LA SOUL ‘3 Feet High and Rising’ - 1989 * Such a positive and joyous poetical/musical reflection stemming from the origins of Hip-Hop. Even 35 years later, this album will put a smile on your face. And so will that burger you’re planning to pair with this wine.
